On 21st February 2007 an unpublished police report on London's gang cuture was leaked and the BBC ran an article which showed that the largest number of gangs were said to be in Hackney (22), Enfield (13), Lambeth and Merton (12 each) and Waltham Forest and Brent (11 each).
On the 30th August 2007, a second report, which was published on the London Guns Gangs and Weapons website (created by Southwark Community Safety Unit) detailed those 169 plus almost another 100 gangs, some of which were partially copied from a list of gangs that appeared here on this site in 2005. The second list appeared in the Evening Standard, the article has since been removed from the Evening Standard website although many people have replicated on personal blogs.

This page is to detail the errors and inaccuracies of the Met Police's "Scotland Yard Intelligence Unit" list of gangs, and below is a copy of the map and list from the Southwark report.

Overall from the "257 gangs list" supposedly compiled by Scotland Yard after discounting unsubstantiated gangs, duplicated gang names and gangs that no longer exist i estimate there to be approximately 90 gangs correctly identified from this exercise.
In terms of criminality, there is a bar chart within the report that estimates the proportion of gangs involved in various offence types:
10-15% involved in murder
30-40% involved in firearms
40-50% involved in serious assault
40-50% involved in drugs supply
50-60% possession of knives
50-60% involved in robbery/street crime
No definitions of how these figures were obtained is indicated. If one member of a youth group committed a robbery would it then be assumed that the group commits robberies based on one individuals offence? How is that gang related? Is gang related crime defined?
Very misleading and largely irrelevant, meaningless use of statistics.
