There are currently approximately 160 active gangs in the London postal area (E, N, SE, SW, W) that are sub-divided into over 300 seperate sub-sets or cliques. Within gangs and sub-sets there can be further divisions by age although this is not always defined.
Not all gang members are criminals! Not all gang members actively engage in crime - yes there are certain individuals who are part of gangs who commit offences but that doesnt always reflect the entire group - and just because members of gangs may commit crime it doesnt necessarily mean their crimes were gang-related or committed by the gang - what is a gang related crime, there is no reliable way of counting gang crimes as many of the more serious offences arise out of more personal vendettas amongst certain individuals often completely unrelated to their gangs. Gangs is such a strong emotive word that gets associated with many negative connotations but the gang provides many young people close friends, safety in numbers, a sense of belonging and something to do to make up for the very underfunded and overlooked youth services in many London boroughs that dont make themself easily accessible to all members of the community - its not just co-incidence that the majority of "gangs" are in the most deprived areas - their just part of wider social problems in society,
